Contraceptive Pearl: Contraception for Women with Endometriosis

Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) are a primary treatment for endometriosis-related pain with efficacy comparable to that of GnRH analogues. Continuous-use OCP regimens have the theoretical advantage of suppressing menstruation. Contraceptive vaginal ring and transdermal patch may control endometriosis pain as well as OCPs.

Progestin-only contraceptives can treat endometriosis pain. These include progestin-only pills, injection, IUD, and implant.

The efficacy of various treatments for endometriosis pain varies greatly among patients. Several contraception methods may need to be tried before symptom control is achieved.
