Hispanic Heritage Month: Miriam Zoila Perez
Miriam is a queer, Cuban writer and activist whose work focuses on race, gender and health. Perez is the founder of the blog Radical Doula, a space to connect reproductive rights, birth activism, doula work, LGBT issues, immigrant rights and racial justice and is the gender and sexuality columnist for Colorlines.
She became a doula in 2004, after watching the documentary Born in the USA and deciding that birth activism was her passion.*
Perez was an Editor at Feministing.com for four years, during which time the site was awarded the Sidney J Hillman Prize for Blog Journalism. Her writing has appeared in The Nation, Taking Points Memo, The American Prospect, MORE Magazine, Rewire and a number of anthologies, including “Yes Means Yes,” “Click” and “Persistence.” Pérez is the author of “The Radical Doula Guide: A Political Primer for Full-Spectrum Pregnancy and Childbirth Support. *
Pérez worked in the reproductive justice movement for eight years, both online and off, including more than six years working with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. She is the former Communications Director at Forward Together, and worked for five years as a consultant for social justice non-profits, focusing on digital communications.*
